Creating Spaces for Black Artists:
I wanted to create a space for Black artists to experiment and be themselves. Being labeled as a Black artist in school was challenging and frustrating, as it often comes with certain expectations and nuances.
After graduating from a PWI (Predominately White Institution) I found comfort in the community of black artists around me. The creation of Black Weirdos opened my eyes to people who had a similar experience and wished for a space to express themselves around like-minded individuals. This included the expectation to discuss politics and create art that only represented "Black faces." However, a wide range of Black artists should feel free to express themselves in any way they choose. Black artists hold the power to represent themselves in any way they see fit. What matters most is their creativity and individuality.

Type Shit”'
“What is it? What does it mean?” It’s art and music in the strokes on the canvas and the rifts of the guitar. It’s when you know you’re the shit and everything you touch is the shit. Creativity makes you look inward after looking outward and thinking deeper than before. It’s in the sway of hips, the words on your lips, and the fire in your eyes. It needs no introduction or explanation; it just is—Type Shit.
TYPE SHIT, the first group show from Black Weirdos founded in 2023 in partnership with Ender Coryat!
